1. Wavelength

What should I look for?

Red and near-infrared wavelengths are the ranges most commonly used in PBM research. When comparing devices, look for a manufacturer that clearly states the wavelengths the device emits rather than simply advertising it as “red light therapy.”

Why does it matter?

Different wavelengths interact with tissue differently, so the wavelengths included in a device should make sense for its intended use.

What should make me cautious?

Be wary of products that don't disclose their wavelengths—or make broad claims about “multiple wavelengths” without telling you exactly what they are.

Bottom line: Don't choose a device because it has more wavelengths. Choose one that clearly identifies its wavelengths and explains their intended purpose.

2. Irradiance

How much light is being delivered?

Irradiance is the amount of optical power delivered to a specific area. It is typically measured in milliwatts per square centimeter (mW/cm²).

When comparing devices, look for a manufacturer that clearly states its irradiance and the distance at which it was measured. A number without a measurement distance doesn't tell you much about how much light you'll actually receive during treatment.

More isn't automatically better. Irradiance needs to be considered along with treatment time and the intended use of the device.

What to look for: A clearly stated irradiance, measured at a realistic treatment distance.

Be cautious of: Very high irradiance claims that don't specify the measurement distance or how the measurement was obtained.

3. Treatment Area

How much of your body can you treat at once?

Treatment area refers to the amount of your body that can be exposed to therapeutic light during a treatment session.

When comparing devices, consider which areas you want to treat and how much coverage you'll need. A smaller device may work well for targeted areas, while a larger panel can treat more of the body at once.

A larger treatment area isn't necessarily better. The right size depends on your goals, available space, treatment routine, and how much time you want to spend repositioning the device.

What to look for: A treatment area that makes sense for the areas you want to treat and how you plan to use the device.

Be cautious of: Choosing a device based on coverage alone. A large treatment area doesn't tell you how much light is actually being delivered to that area.

4. Dose & Treatment Time

How much light are you receiving, and for how long?

Dose refers to the amount of light energy delivered to a specific area during a treatment. It is typically expressed as joules per square centimeter (J/cm²).

Dose depends on both irradiance and treatment time. A device delivering more light per second may require less treatment time than one delivering less, but a higher dose isn't automatically better.

When comparing devices, look for treatment recommendations that clearly state how long to use the device, at what distance, and under what conditions.

What to look for: Clear treatment instructions that connect irradiance, distance, and treatment time.

Be cautious of: Devices that promote a specific dose as if it guarantees better results, without explaining how that dose was determined or how it relates to the device's intended use.

5. Device Design

How is the device designed to deliver the light?

Red light therapy devices come in many forms, including full-body panels, smaller panels, masks, wraps, saunas, and smaller targeted devices. The design affects how the device is positioned and how consistently the light can reach the intended treatment area.

When comparing devices, consider the size and configuration of the device (does it fit in your home?), how close you need to be to it, and whether the design allows you to maintain the recommended distance during treatment.

A sophisticated-looking design doesn't necessarily mean better performance. What matters is whether the device is designed to deliver its stated specifications consistently and appropriately for its intended use.

What to look for: A design that makes it practical to position the device correctly and maintain a consistent treatment distance.

Be cautious of: Features that sound impressive but don't explain how they improve the actual delivery of light.

6. Ease of Use

Will you actually use it?

Even a well-designed red light therapy device isn't very useful if it becomes a hassle to use.

When comparing devices, consider how easy it is to set up, position, use, and store. Think about whether you can comfortably fit treatment into your normal routine and whether you'll need to hold or reposition the device during a session.

Convenience isn't just about comfort. A device that's easy to use consistently may be a better choice than one with impressive specifications that ends up sitting in a closet.

What to look for: A device that fits naturally into your routine and makes it easy to follow the manufacturer's treatment recommendations.

Be cautious of: Choosing a device based solely on specifications while overlooking how practical it will be to use regularly.

7. Transparency

Can you find the information you need to make an informed decision?

A reputable manufacturer should clearly explain what its device delivers and how its specifications were determined.

When comparing devices, look for specific information about wavelengths, irradiance, measurement distance, treatment area, treatment time, and recommended use. Ideally, the manufacturer should also provide information about how its specifications were measured or tested.

You shouldn't have to hunt through marketing language to figure out what a device actually delivers.

What to look for: Clear, specific specifications and straightforward treatment instructions.

Be cautious of: Vague claims such as “medical grade,” “clinically proven,” or “maximum power” without supporting details that allow you to evaluate what those claims actually mean.

Bottom line: The more transparent a manufacturer is about its device and its specifications, the easier it is to make an informed comparison.
